So, what’s next?

The matter is that teeth ligament has practically lifetime form memory. After the tooth movement, it tries to get its primary state, and exactly this is a reason of all recurrences. There are records, confirming, that anterior teeth move and get initial position even in a long date (10-30 years).

In order to maintain the achieved result of the treatment special appliances – retainers – are used. There are two main types of retainers: removable and non-removable.

Retainers. What is it?

Non-removable retainer is a thin wire, covered with a small layer of filling material. It is fixed in the internal surface of anterior teeth. It ensures stable teeth position after movement. Non-removable retainer will be fixed to your teeth as long as you wish to save teeth straight after correcting them.

Besides non-removable retainers, a removable retentional retainer may be made for you. A removable retentional appliance is a plate, made of plastic basis, with metal elements for teeth fixing. It allows to maintain evenness of posterior teeth, maintains new width of teeth alignment and doesn’t let spaces open in the area of removed teeth.

How shall you use retainers

Your aim is to maintain entirety of retainers. If a damage occurs (for example, filling material chopping off or wire breaking) you shall timely see an orthodontist.

Every day of delay threaten the movement of a tooth with a glued off retainer. You shall remember some recommendations, if you want such breakings occur as rarely as possible:

1. Do not bite products with anterior teeth: for example, apples, carrots, etc. Teeth mobility remains within 1 year after braces removal, so a retainer may glue off, when you bite an apple, and it will lead to a retainer glue off.
2. Do not chew seeds, pistachios, crackers and sweets, like candied roasted nuts, with anterior teeth.
3. Too hot tea, coffee, soup may lead to filling material cracking and its chopping off.
4. Combination of products with large temperature difference (for example, coffee and ice cream) also lead to filling material and teeth enamel cracking.
5. If you were non-removable retainer, you shall pass professional oral hygiene procedure twice a year. You shall clean retainer carefully daily, so the plaque wouldn’t gather around it.
6. A removable retainer requires care. You shall clean it with a toothbrush with past or soap. Store appliance in a rigid box or in a jar with a seal cover. Put wet cloth on the bottom. Therefore, the appliance will be stored in wet environment.
7. It is required to observe orthodontist’s requirements, related to the time of removable retainer wearing, carefully. A removable appliance shall be worn during 3 periods of your orthodontic treatment. So you’re your treatment lasted for 3 tears, the period of a removable retainer wearing will be 5-6 years.

Removable retention appliance use scheme after orthodontic treatment termination:

• from the 1st to the 6th month – 12-16 hours a day;
• 1st year — every day for the nighttime;
• 2nd year — once in 2 days, in the nighttime;
• 3rd year — 2-3 times a week;
• 4th year — twice a week;
• 5th year — once a week;

5th year — once a week;

During the retention period, you shall visit the orthodontist for check-up examination.

Check-up examination shall be executed 1 month after braces removal. Then, it shall be executed 3 and 6 months after. Then, one a year.

At the appointment a doctor will examine your retention appliances regarding its entirety and functionality, the doctor will give you recommendations in relation to the further use. Moreover, if necessary, the doctor will fix retainers.
